2012 Latino Heritage parade & jamaica next meeting news and Grand Marshal is...

Our next planning meeting for this year's parade & jamaica is Tuesday, June 5th.  It will be at Madison Elementary School library on the sw corner of Buckeye and Madison.  The meeting is from 5:30-6:30.  All are welcome to join in the planning.

We have have had some wonderful Grand Marshals for the Latino Heritage parade & jamaica.   A very partial list includes: Lalo Guerrero, Raul Rodriguez, Dolores Huerta, Val Zavala, Tomas Benitez, Tony Plana, Suzanna Guzmán, and Hector Tobar.

We are proud to share that on October 6, 2012, Dr. David Hayes-Bautista will join their ranks.

For those of you not yet familiar with Dr. Hayes-Bautista, here's a brief bio as provided by Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture.

"David E. Hayes-Bautista is a native of Los Angeles, CA. He received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970 when there were only 25 Latinos on the entire campus. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco and served as the founding Executive Director of La Clínica de la Raza in Oakland, California. He was a member of the Faculty at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley from 1974 to 1987.

He accepted a position at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where in 1992 he established the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture within the Division of General/Internal Medicine. His articles appear in Journals ranging from Academic Medicine to Salud Pública de México. Some of his publications include The Burden of Support: Young Latinos in an Aging Society, and La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State.

Meet our Chairperson for the 2012 Latino Heritage parade & jamaica committee

Over the next several days we'll be sharing a bit about each of our honored dignitaries and award recipients.  It's great that we have all of these in place so early in the year.  We also have a new position that is being filled.   We are so lucky that Sandra M. Gutierrez is our first Committee Chair for the Latino Heritage parade & jamaica committee.

She is a California native from the Coachella Valley. Sandra lives in Pasadena with her husband, Luis R. Torres, a writer and journalist. She has Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Management and works for Kaiser Permanente.

Sandra is a community activist who has advocated for immigrant rights, unionization, youth counseling and cultural diversity. She is on the advisory committee for the annual Adelante Mujer Latina Conference which provides career and educational options for high school girls. Sandra is also the Co-editor of the award-winning book, Teatro Chicana, A Collective Memoir and Selected Plays, published in April 2008 by the University of Texas Press.

Sandra will be leading meetings and helping us stay connected to each as we continue our preparations for this year.

Please join us next Tuesday, May 15th.  We'll meet from 5:30 to 6:30.

Latino Heritage website and a bit more

If the image above looks to you like it's in progress - you're right, it is.

We are in the midst of re-thinking, revitalizing, and generally updating our website.  We're planning to unveil it in about 4 weeks or so.

Why so long?
The brief answer is because we are working with students.  They'll have a chance to gain experience with a "customer" and the outcome will benefit both our organization and the student.  It's a learning experience that should prove useful to the students and will look good on their resume.

We thank Otoño Luján, our former board president, for all the work he has done to help us get this far.  He had a lot on his plate last year and still found time to work on this project.

Our next planning meeting will be this coming Tuesday, May 1st, from 5:30-6:30.   We will begin promptly.  It will be at Madison Elementary School library.  Our 4/17 post includes a helpful map.

Please take a look at our 4/23 blog entry and think about how you might participate with preparation or presentation of our event.

Taco USA and more at LA Plaza

Tuesday night Chief Operating Officer Gustavo Herrera stopped long enough to have his picture taken.  He and the  dedicated staff LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes has been presenting a wide variety of events.  In February they and MALDEF together recognized the experience of the Repatriated/Expatriated Mexicanos and Mexican Americans that went to Mexico primarily during the 1930s.  The plaque that was dedicated that day is a beautiful testament to their tribulations.

In March they had a grand celebration commemorating Cesar E. Chavez.  Conjunto Los Pochos and printmaking.  This past week Gustavo Arellano, editor of the OC Weekly and writer of the Ask a Mexican column  had his first book signing for his new volume Taco USA at LA Plaza.
I understand that next month Dr. David Hayes Bautista will be involved with their Cinco de Mayo celebration.  Seems appropriate since his new book
Cinco de Mayo - An American Tradition is recently released.
Good luck Gustavo Herrera, Cindi Dale - Senior Curator,  and James Foster - La Tienda Godfather.
Looks like you've got some busy, productive days ahead of you.
